Building Your Team

hello I’m Gary Shotton and I’m here as a part of Inspiring Better Business IBBTalks today we’re going to talk about building your team now all companies need to be thinking about that of course there are small companies that are just what we call necessity companies or what we also call lifestyle companies that doesn’t have very large teams very big team but in our case we want to work towards having a team big enough that you can get away from your company and actually enjoy life a little bit away from the company so we’re going to talk about systems and processes and how to get more than just your family involved and so you want to build your company if when you’re building your company you’ve got to build your team and if you build your team you want to build instruct them and show them how you’re gonna build on systems that’s an entire another teaching we talk about a lot and then as you do that they’re gonna actually actually ask you like it happened to me for you to kind of get out of their way because they know what to do they’re building the company because they’re working as a team and they’re building the system so they’re the company is not dependent upon them and them alone and there’s no hidden secrets inside the company you’re all available to function like a team like a sports team sports players on any team they have to realize they’re replaceable they might get injured and so that’s what you’re looking for here so the the the best thing we can do is tidy and build our team and then in a way get out of their way so that they can work on now we’re quite involved with helping people on your team find their calling that’s where this subject really is about I like to talk about helping others finding what God has them to do and there’s we’re actually have a responsibility there because we’re not just plugging people in dispositions and so that we can gain the benefit of them we’re actually helping people improve their lives in a way that we’re adding to the life and yes it benefits the company I just had a company meeting with our entire company and I mentioned to them all this is my company behind is a machine shop and it’s one of the best companies you can work for because you can learn how to be a machinist here not just a button-pusher not just somebody a robot but you can learn a lot and so we want people to go away from this company knowing if they move to another state we hope they live here to work for us a long long time but they’ve left with some skills that will no one will ever take away from them so we’re in our company wanting to find those people that will find their spots and that they that we’re helping them find what they’re best at it’s after you start looking that’s pretty obvious I’m getting good at it now what am I talking about helping others find their calling well in the Bible there’s what’s called the Ministry of helps those are the people that are helping the pastors and evangelists and the teachers and the prophets those things that are listed in Ephesians 4 and you know I’ve been in that position all of my life I know I’m not one of those main leaders of a church I’m happy that I’m not that I’m happy that I know that I’m not to be that because I’m called to be an entrepreneur to be in business and so I’ve always been in the Ministry of helps you know what I did today I helped clean up the auditorium after our service and restock the envelopes along with about 20 other what we would call uh sure’s I’ve done that for years I’ve helped teach Sunday School class I’m not bragging I’m just saying I’m involved with that part of the our local church and you should consider that as well but there’s other things they’re saying it’s called the gifts of administration’s it’s listed in the Bible and I’ve always talked about Joseph’s a little bit and how what a great guy he was and I realized that he was never an entrepreneur I mentioned him being gift as an entrepreneur a business owner he never owned anything that’s not true he’s a gift of administration you know what he was sold into Potiphar’s household and he was so good that Potiphar gave control of every single thing in his entire empire to Potter to Joe and he read the entire operation that’s an administrator something happened if you know the story it was not right but he got accused or something and now he’s in the John dungeon in the prison how does somebody rise from the being thrown in the prison to be in charge of the prison he’s the administrator of the prison wonderful he interprets a dream there’s more to the story he comes out working for Pharaoh the richest man by far in the world the entire world’s economy Joseph was the administrator to be sure that the the grain was put up the storage was right and it all turns out that he was the gift of administration I talked to my staff when I leave and I say you know most of you my plant manager is the gift of administration he’s good my quality manager is the gift of administration he’s good my right-hand person or the executive assistant as a gift of administration he’s good those people helped put the system together so that’s what I’m doing now there’s another one it’s called those that are skilled in technical things you find that in the Old Testament when the temple was being built and I think the Hebrew word that’s called Malacca I had a reason to know that word and those are that that’s the name gift given to those that it says find those that are skilled and gifted in working with wood working with metals and working with tapestry sewing you know we don’t have much of that but we have computer people they’re good with computers they know how to fix computers we have other people that are mechanics they’re mechanically minded we have in our case machinist boy they are good at making these parts that are behind me behind me they are gifted in the skills of their their skill sets of technical skills and almost everybody falls in that to some degree now let me be clear as the entrepreneur I have some abilities in these areas I have some abilities of administration but I’m not the best administrator if you’re around me you’ll know that I need to turn that over to those like giving raises increasing pay I’m not the one that does that my staff does that because I’m not that and and other things and so I cannot run a machine I cannot run I’m even measure apart so I’m not skilled in this area I’m skilled in business but I’m an entrepreneur now in helping someone find their gifting that’s part of your job as the business owner I think and when you do that you’re not plugging people into your need you’re finding where they fit best in their skill sets with your needs and if you don’t they don’t you’re giving them a favor doing them a favor if you let them go fine so that in and we can all do something temporarily I understand but in the long run you want them to find something they’re good at even as a worker or a technical person by the way I’ve got to mention this go to our website and listen to Alfred Matua he is from Nairobi Kenya and he is a mechanic he says in his own word multiple times I know how to fix things even the most difficult automobiles without all the assistance he’s in Africa he can fix things that’s what we have now there’s a quick rundown of things you can do and I’ll be quick with this you know help your people go into the Bible and find people that are administrators like Joseph and show them that that is a true gifting go in like Moses had an errand he Moses stuttered you know he stuttered and God gave him Aaron as the spokesperson that’s a gift of helps he was helping go in and find those examples of people that are a technically good like there in the Old Testament they built things they were gifted with their hands it’s there you can find it and see it so we’re here as part of life part of people’s lives and if you can see yourself being an aid to other people and helping them fulfill the calling God has on their life I’m telling you what you’re gonna you’re gonna be walking better in your life there’s a saying by Zig Ziglar this may be close but if you help enough other people get in like what they are wanting in life you’ll find that that’s how you get what you want in life that’s a close summary of what he had
