Same Laws

By Gary Shotton – (Transcription by Caitlin O’Hanlan)

Hello, my name is Gary Shotton and I am here in Baltimore, Maryland near Washington DC, our state capitol. I have been on a trip for 4 days with my lovely wife. One of the things I thoroughly enjoy about traveling is the chance to meet all kinds of different types of people. There is a variety of backgrounds that exist in and around Washington, D.C.  During our tours, we have encountered many different languages.  However, one thing I found to ring true on my many travels is that the same rules of life exist even in different continents of the world.

While standing in line for a few minutes, I met a new acquaintance from Argentina. Come to find out, both of us are grandpas and we were showing off our pictures to each other. We are extremely proud and supportive of our family. So it does not surprise me that the laws of business are similar around the world. The law of gravity is shown when you drop something therefore, gravity will hold it to the ground.

Because of the fact I travel so much, I often find myself in airports. Airports provide you with transportation back and forth to your desired destinations. Rules and laws of flight have been in place since the start of creation. However, mankind has only discovered it about a hundred and twenty years ago. And so once we found these laws, we put them into practice in our daily lives. We can start making that work to our advantage. Well, this is my opinion on the rules of business.

You could be in a developing nation and be thinking that you are the only that has it so difficult. You may be thinking there is no way you are going to have your own business or get ahead in life. If you put the laws of business into practice and apply them, you will be able to greatly succeed. The more you know in life and use that knowledge, the more you will learn and grow.  Your potential is unlimited and endless!

For example, my friend Hamis in the country of Uganda began with the laws of business. He started with virtually nothing and just announced that he purchased 20,000 chickens and now is at 30,000 that are going to be laying eggs. There is also a technical side of any business in his case. He knew how to take excellent care of the chickens so that they would produce well. He learned the technical side, but the business side was the same.

Certain kinds of people are good at certain things. We all have different talents or areas of specialties. For example, if you like a certain type of food another person beside you may make it better than you do. You have to find what you are good at and really enjoy doing otherwise, you will end up being miserable all the time. Be you! Be unique and do what God has called you to do.  In addition, the same person raising chickens probably is not going to be the same person that is going to be making cakes in the oven. You may have some skills in that area, but find something you’re passionate about and then apply the laws of business which are universal.

In the area of customer service, if you have a happy customer you are going to have a repeat customer and also be referred to as a good place of business. If you have excellent quality, people will want to come back for more of the same. Basically no matter what you do the laws of business are considered the same. If you want people to like you then continue with these established laws and be a hard worker and you will get good results.

Additionally, you have the law of systems and processes if we are going to be efficient. These are lessons we are teaching on, but you have to put them into practice in your own life. If you can learn the business side of the laws then you can also learn the technical side. Let me provide you with some more examples of these laws.  I just recently visited East Africa for 18 days, Uganda for 6 days, Tanzania for 6 days, Kenya for 6 days. During that period of time, we have met some wonderful people. One of them is Alfred, the mechanic, and he used the laws of business. It was interesting to see how he had learned with many years of practice how to be a good mechanic while working for someone else. He was in his forties now, but now he is owning his own business.  He has taken that background knowledge and put it to good use. Wow! I encourage all my subscribers to watch Alfred Mutua, the mechanic, on our video selections! What a great example! One of those keys was, he knows how to take care of the customers and also thinks ahead. He is making sure that not one of his customers is inconvenienced by not having a vehicle. He provides loaner vehicles for them. This is in Kenya and they have some influence and they are willing to pay extra. They just want to make sure it is done right if money is no object.  They are always going to be concerned about spending too much money. However, they are more willing to pay to make sure their family has a very good quality and safe vehicle to drive. This is especially important if they are considering driving to another country. Customer service is a major point in his line of work. This law should be important in every business. Happy customers equal more profit and a happy life! Well, he is also aware of the younger generation who are just out of college and may be in desperate need of transportation.

For example, a small family with only one car will tend to be more cost-conscious when buying a car. They are taking into account of every shilling they make and want to be sure they are spending it wisely. Because they do not have a lot of extra money, he actually provides a different level of service.  The first level is premium for the older generation, and the other is basic for the younger cost- conscious generation.

Let’s talk about our friends up in Eldoret Kenya. Wow! They are helping so many businesses get started. They have helped more than a thousand businesses to get started when we were there. But you know, one of the things they did? They would only bring people in to help that they were 100% Confident of their integrity. They are confident that we would pay the loan back in their case. In a way, they created a mini Bank. They started with $1,000 U.S. dollars in the year 2009. Now their lending capability, under their control, is up to 2 million U.S. dollars. That is amazing! You know that every loan can only go to someone if their integrity can be vouched for.

In conclusion, you have to make sure the vendors are doing things everything you want them to. Know your customer base! Make sure that you’re knowledgeable about whatever you may be selling or doing. Make sure also that you have a perspective from all sides of the equation and that you understand the business side of things. Also try to keep the business side separate from the technical side, if at all possible. Wow that is so powerful! As you have seen in this article, the laws of business are so important and can be so useful in many areas of life and work. I hope this inspires you to keep up the good work! Well, I am so glad you are with me! I hope you enjoy these teachings. Thank you so much for being a part of this!
