Steps To Success

By Timothy Kitonga

This text is in Extreme Rough draft and will be edited in the near future.

My name is Timothy Kitonga, team leader of Keystone group, a company that deals with design branding and digital marketing. So I’m going to talk about my past experience or else may whatever I have learned over time in the few years that I have been in business. So one thing that I’ve really realized apart from you having the passion and apart from you having the resources that you feel that you have currently, you need to have that driving force within you that makes you wake up every day in the morning, go out there meet new people, have better experiences out there, and give your all. But one thing that I realized when I was beginning, I didn’t have any experience, but I decided to learn from the team that I had, but one thing that I’ve really managed to learn a lot is that you need to hire people who are better than you so that they can give you the best of knowledge that they have learned out there, be it in terms of experience, be it in terms of education that they managed to acquire over time, but one thing that is key, you need to have people better than you. From the accounting aspect, from the customer service aspect, from sales, from the product development that you currently have, you need to have people who are better than you. I think that has really helped me so much. Building relationships is one key thing. If you break any relationship that may mean that you’ve broken a business that could have really helped you for quite some time. A thing that has really also helped me so much is that whatever you mean is whatever you say. It’s better you promise something but you give better than whatever you’ve really promised instead of promising so much and then you undercut the person that you’ve really promised and that happens overboard from your clients, from your service providers, to even the people whom you’ve partnered with be it the banks, be it may be the insurance company, be it even the people in the transport industry, any person that you’ve managed to come across with, you need to give the lead to help the word that you’re really saying. A thing that has really helped me is that there are so many people who think that making a mistake is bad. Personally, I’ve made so many mistakes, but I’ve decided to learn from them because having negative feedback, that doesn’t mean that it is the end of the road. We normally expect every time to have positive feedback whenever we go out there. There are some days that can be very embarrassing, they can be so disappointing, but from that little experience you decide, okay this is me, let me recollect myself, start the staircase again and you realize that from the mistakes that you’ve learned, you are really stronger and you really do things in a better way. For example, giving out credit without documentation, you really need to document that. You need to have clear guidelines on how are you going to make sure that you are going to follow up such kind of payments. Are you going to be protected? Is the plan protected? You need to be both protected by such kind of measures that you’re going to have, and remember there is a very thin line between being protected and even exploiting the client. So make sure that whatever documentation that you have is really as per the standards of wherever you are. In Kenya we have our own standards, out there there are other standards as well. And finally last but not least, you will not expect to get a success of a millionaire when you just work from 8 to 5. You really need to give your all if you want to be a millionaire, you really need to do double effort. For example, if you usually wake up at 7:00 a.m. do not expect to be the millionaire that you desire. The other thing is if you just leave your workplace at 4:00 p.m. you will not become that. You really need to put your all, wake up at 3, think about your dreams , think about your vision that you have, think about how you are going to impact the society with whatever you dream . Because still, you may be putting a lot of effort but to do things that are going to harm the society. But remember whatever you do make sure it is going to build a society, it is going to make wherever you are. For example, like a possibility whatever I’m doing, I’m trying to make sure that is I’m going to make Kenya a better place. I’m going to provide employment, I’m going to provide job opportunities, I’m going to impact someone young out there. And lastly, whatever you do, remember that God is the beginning of everything. Don’t forget that everything that you do, always begin with God, and you should also end with Him. Wake up early in the morning, start a prayer with God knows whatever you desire and in the beginning and after the end of the day, always remember that it is God who has taken you through. You’ve been protected from all kinds of accidents, it may have been a worse day, but God has taken you through, that has been the key factor in our company. Prayers have really taken us to the levels that you’ve never imagined and I encourage all young guys, prayers are not only for the older generation, but still you as a young person you really need to remember that it is God who can help you move from where you are to where you ought to be, but your effort is really important and your passion is the driving force. And remember, the sky is the lower limit. Thank you.
